The prosecution of the former chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Antasari Azhar, has once again become the subject of further criticism from law experts who deemed that the court proceedings which led to his 18-year prison sentence were flawed. On Saturday, representatives of the Indonesian Law Graduates Association (ISHI) visited Antasari at a state penitentiary in Tangerang, Banten, to hear his full account of the nature of his alleged involvement in the murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnain. Speaking to reporters after the visit, ISHI advisory board chairman Jimly Ashiddiqie said he was convinced that Antasari was a victim of a wayward legal system after studying a document, which Antasari presented at the prison. “After hearing his story, I am convinced that Antasari is a victim of an errant legal system. As a nation, we have to fix our legal system within three years,” Jimly said, referring to the remaining period of the current administration. He refused to elaborate on the document that was presented.
Jimly said that if the government does not carry out reform, the next period of governance would demand more radical measures to address and resolve the existing conditions. “Judges cannot play golf with politicians nor with business players. They should play golf with fellow judges,” he said. Previously in April the Judicial Commission (KY) said it had found indications that judges in Antasari Azhar’s trial ignored important evidence and testimony that might have cleared him of murder charges. Judicial Commission monitoring division chief Suparman Marzuki said the commission is currently seeking evidence to support allegations that the panel of judges who presided over the trial of Antasari ignored several significant points of evidence in the case.
